Okay.. why doesn’t Carol just go to another room. As far as we know the Seavers only own one television. We’ve seen them use different phones in different rooms.
Well Mike and Ben do decide to stop. Not because of Carol, but because Jason is home and it’s “allowance day”. All three of them get into a position and look like they’re cleaning to look better to Jason.
Jason sees through their scheme and gives them their allowance. But what’s this? He gives them double. Oh it’s because Jason’s birthday is this month, February 8th and he thinks they’ll use the extra money for him. That’s get them talking about what they’re getting this unfunny cartoon character. Ben made him an ash tray that resembles a heart. Ironic and Jason doesn’t even smoke. Carol doesn’t tell. Mike is getting him a book? It’s suppose to be a joke on how Mike doesn’t know Jason already has books, I don’t know.
Maggie comes home from work and is greeted by Jason. She asks him how his day went, but she pretty much blocks him out because of how she can’t believe all three kids are cleaner. Maggie then goes into her day and how she got this assignment she has been clamoring for. She says she’ll be working on it all weekend. But Saturday is Jason’s birthday. Maggie has “forgotten.”
In the other room, Mike and Carol are arguing about who’s going to get the more expensive gift for Jason. Ben feeling left out throws his face into the folded laundry and screams, when Mike gets up to saying he’ll spend $200. Ben usually only gets paid $2.
Ben makes his way into the kitchen and to play along with Maggie’s trick, acts like he doesn’t know what Saturday is. Jason leaves. Ben is worried he doesn’t have enough money to buy a good gift for Jason. Maggie says how it doesn’t matter how much he spends as long as it comes from the heart.
Next scene Ben is watching TV and sees a religious add. This convinces to pray for money. Mike comes in and tells him it’s useless, he’s tried.
Of course he has.
The doorbell rings and it’s a woman asking for money for the needy. Ben, seeing himself as needy, swipes the money from her hand and closes the door.
She angrily knocks on it and takes it back. Mike gives Ben the can he just finished drinking out of and tells him to go door to door asking donations for “Charity” so Ben will get money to buy an expensive gift.
Here’s the thing though, Mike knew he himself was kidding. Ben did not.
It’s Jason Birthday next scene. Maggie got him a fishing rod.
Mike got him a record consisting of songs from the 60s and Carol got him tickets to see Nuts on Broadway. Ben got him a very expensive camera.
They ask how he got the money then ask where he got the idea. He then explains that he got the idea from God.. and Mike.
They’re both in for it now.
After some talking, Mike’s punishment is that he has to donate his allowance for the next month to Charity.
Ben, along with Jason, will return the camera and the money to the people who gave it to him. Carol doesn’t think it’s a good idea but Jason assures her, it’ll work.
Final scene: Jason leaves Ben’s bedroom. After showing Maggie the ashtray, she admits about how he was right about the punishment. Also how it was nice for him to be the bad guy for once. Then they basically hint about they’re gonna go do it.
And that’s the point.
