Season 1, Episode 9, “Carol’s Crush”

This episode is really stupid unless you like episodes about fourteen-year-old girls relationship problems and then it’s only stupid to me.

Carol has to move her volcano science project because Jeff, a family friend, is staying in the guestroom.

Screen Shot 2014-07-03 at 11.21.13 PM

The Seavers haven’t seen Jeff since his parents moved a few years ago. The kids comment about how Jeff has “goofy” teeth then Jeff arrives. Carol answers the door and is amazed by how much he’s grown. Jeff says the same thing to Carol. Jeff is 23, btw. read more

Season 1, Episode 8, “Slice of Life”

This week’s episode, “Slice of Life,” opens in the kitchen for a change. Ha Ha.

Jason mentions how coffee is an aphrodisiac—(i.e, makes you more romantic). Upon hearing this, Maggie wants more.

They hear a loud crash and in come Ben and Carol. Ben’s mad at Carol for turning off his water from an HOUR-AND-A-HALF shower. Ben’s reasoning for this collosal waste of resources is he wanted to break the world record for most time under water, which is 12 days.

Screen Shot 2014-06-26 at 10.53.28 PM

Seeing how sad he is from not breaking the record, Carol agrees to help him break another one. Jason and Maggie get back to what they’re doing when they’re interrupted by Mike, who wants to take karate lessons. But I don’t understand how he already has the uniform when he hasn’t taken a lesson yet???? read more

Season 1, Episode 7, “Weekend Fantasy”

This week’s episode starts out with Maggie and Jason, in the kitchen…

The couple is discussing how busy they are. Jason brings up how they haven’t had a lot of alone time lately.

In comes Ben, asking Maggie where the wings are for his angel costume for the school play. This made me laugh. Suddenly Mike bursts into the room wearing Ben’s wings and acting like he’s flying. He’s also wearing protective goggles and using a bicycle wheel to steer.

Screen Shot 2014-06-19 at 10.00.27 PM

Carol also walks in and immediately picks up a grapefruit. Mike steals the grapefruit right as she’s peeling it and makes a basket right into the halo that Ben’s wearing. Fed up with the shenanigans, Maggie threatens the three of them by saying that “The last one on the school bus has to eat Jason’s pancakes.” read more

Season 1, Episode 6, “Mike’s Madonna Story”

Episode 6 starts out in the living room. Jason and Maggie are debating what the name should be of one of the plants Carol is using for project for school. Jason thinks the plant is a he and wants to name it Sam. Carol thinks the plant is a she and wants to name it Wendy.

Screen Shot 2014-06-12 at 9.35.05 PM

The debate is ended by Jason saying how he went to medical school and looks at the bottom of the pot the plant is in agreeing with Carol that the plant is a Wendy.

How exciting…

Maggie like any sensible person would ask (even though she’s not) what are they doing. Carol
explains how she has two plants. One of which she talks to and the other she ignores. By this she’s seeing which one grows faster. read more

Season 1, Episode 5, “Superdad.”

I’m sorry to be such a “grump,” but I wish I could go back in time and prevent this show from ever being created. Pretty strong language for someone who just started writing this blog over a month ago.
But it is what it is and the episodes if I’m being honest, which I clearly am, are pretty uninspiring.

That being said, I am nothing if not true to my word, and we will trudge forward.

Without further ado, I give you Episode 5 of Growing Pains, Season One.

This episode starts out with Jason in the kitchen and Ben rushes in, wanting protection from a “rabid” dog attack. read more

Season 1, Episode 11, “Standardized Test”

Guys and girls I don’t know what happened. The DVD’s I’m using had this episode as the next one, when it’s supposed to be “Superdad.” I found out when I went to check the name of this episode, “Standardized Test”, and turns out this is episode 11. So enjoy episode 11. I’ll get it all squared out by next week. I swear I should’ve done “The Wonder Years.” All those episodes are on Netflix and in order. Sorry about all this.

Growing Pains Season 1, Episode 4, “Carol’s Article”

Episode Four finds our scintillating Seavers in the kitchen once again.

Screen Shot 2014-05-22 at 4.17.01 PM

Why am I not surprised?

Maggie asks Mike to call Carol to dinner and Carol shouts back that she’ll be right down because she has to finish a paragraph for her tryout for the school paper. Mike being Mike makes a snarky comment about Carol’s response. Maggie asks if he could keep his comments to a minimum.

And for his response, wouldn’t you know it, another snarky comment: “So what, three or four?”

Carol joins the family with Jason commenting on how hard she’s working on this article. Carol responds that she’s working on it so hard because it has to be THE BEST! read more

Season 1, Episode 3, “Jealousy”

This week, we move on to the third episode of the First Season. We’re moving right along and this episode kicks off with what I’d imagined as a recurring theme for the series, that is Jason can’t cook.

Screen Shot 2014-05-15 at 3.56.29 PM

Jason prepares eggs—and honestly who can’t cook scrambled eggs—but Carol and Mike both pass on the eggs and then he proceeds to offer them leftover liver from the night. Now the eggs aren’t looking so bad.

Screen Shot 2014-05-15 at 4.01.27 PM

Ben enters the kitchen, telling his father that he needs ideas for his science project. Jason asks Mike and Carol what they did for their science projects, but Ben doesn’t get much inspiration from hearing their replies. read more

Season 1, Episode 2, “Springsteen”

This second episode of Season I begins with Carol, Jason, and Maggie in the kitchen. The phone rings and Carol goes to answer it, but Mike, sure the call is about his Springsteen tickets, rolls in on skates, swiping the phone from Carol’s hand.

Screen Shot 2014-05-08 at 3.45.46 PM

Now this next part seems strange to me. In a self-assured tone, Mike says, “yep, ok bye,” leading the viewer to believe the got the tickets (He didn’t.). When his dad asks, “Gonna see Springsteen, huh?” Mike, despite having not actually gotten the tickets, responds in a cocky tone, “Yep, tomorrow night.” Performing a shitty Bruce Springsteen impression, Mike proceeds to explain his method of scoring tickets for a sold out show, optimistic of his abilities to acquire the tickets. read more

Season 1, Episode 1, “Pilot”

When I first decided that I wanted to do a review blog, I had a hard time deciding what series I should choose. Then I decided on Growing Pains. It was perfect because I wanted to do a show I wasn’t too familiar with and hadn’t seen in awhile. But wanted to revisit. The last time I saw an episode of the show was when it aired on Nick@Nite in 2007-2008. So please join me as I review every episode of this show in chronological order.

The pilot begins with an introduction video narrated by the Seaver parents, Jason and Maggie played by Alan Thicke and Joanna Kerns. The couple sets up the series by explaining what they each do for a living. read more
